The first step in preparing wood floors to receive new tile involves securing plywood subfloors or hardwood to the joists below.

Lay down tile cement or thinset mortar where your first section of tile will be.
Lay down 1 2 inch thick cement backerboard over the wood subfloor or hardwood.
Use 2 inch screws every 3 inches along the length of each board to.
Install the wood floor first then tile around it.
Cut the backerboard to fit the edges of the room with a carbide tipped scoring tool.
The goal is to have a nice even application of cement or mortar for the tile to hold onto and even horizontal lines grip the tile.
