We re back with another question for the home flooring pros this week we re looking at floor measurements and the best way to measure for flooring which is such an essential part of planning your flooring project and most importantly your budget.
Use a tape measure and have someone help you so you can get an accurate measurement of each wall.
Doing this gives you a much better picture of where the floor slopes and how much.
If the room is square or rectangular you only need to measure 2 of the walls.
Your result is the measurement of the total floor area.

Create a floor plan showing 5 foot increments then write the elevation at each of these points as you measure.
A few tips for measuring your project.
For instance if the room is 12 feet wide and 12 feet long the area of the floor is 144 square feet.
Multiply the length and the width to get the main area s measurement.
Record this number on your drawing.
Sketch a floor plan of the room and record your measurements for each area.
For plank floors divide by the case coverage.
Make sure that both you and your helper are holding the tape measure at the bottom of the wall so that you get a true measurement of the length at floor level.
If the room you re measuring the floors in isn t a rectangle or square divide it into smaller segments that are and calculate the area of each segment.

We ll use the example of a case covering 20 square feet.
